Sickness In Seattle

Letty and Tamara from the Russ Reid Company treated us to an amazing seafood dinner tonight in this restaurant.

So, although I am having a wonderful time, I had to spend 15 hours in bed just to feel somewhat normal today. Blah. And wouldn't you know it, this is the day the cloud cover has left us!! It's gorgeous out!

Ken's funny email today: "Shadow [our cat] has taken to sleeping downstairs since you've been gone. The fear of ken is the beginning of his wisdom."

Over 200 days of cloud cover per YEAR!

This is my room. It's a nice room. I wish I were in my room right now. More specifically, my bed! I think I am coming down with something. Tonight is our "free night" so I guess that's good since I can just crash. However, I REALLY want to go see the VERY FIRST STARBUCKS and buy the commemorative mug!! AND... I read a management book called "FISH," set at Pike's Market. Guess what?! It's in downtown Seattle! Conveniently located near the very first Starbucks... Hm... I wonder who's seminar I'm going to skip to take a city bus downtown? Hopefully no one who reads my BLOG...

Yesterday they let us out for a couple hours. I helped load the busses... I began loading our people onto the Alaskan Cruise bus... Funny, they weren't complaining!

Oh, and something you should know about Seattle. It rains. Not a little. A lot. Every day. Grey. Dreary. Gloomy. However, the humongous flower-laden trees are gorgeous. Still, blue skies and yellow wheat are looking better and better every day!

So, those that didn't end up going to Alaska went to the Space Needle! Tom and Vicki (yes, our Vicki) took a very dangerous trip up this rickety ride. Tom figured the Space Needle was boring so he spent his money (and two dollars of mine!) on some very scary theme park ride. His wife, Lori, observing the two of them at the top, swinging their feet and looking out at the view of the Space Needle, commented, "They're probably just having one last look at the world before they die!"

Anyway, a great time was had by all. And we're all still alive!

Weekend Bloggery

Okay, don't get used to me blogging on the weekends but I can hardly resist during my "convention vacation." Here's a tidbit about what I learned from our speaker, Mark Fisher, during yesterdays "expansion day about boards of directors:"

There is common ground that all rescue workers MUST share--staff, volunteers, and board members. It is a love for the poor. A compassion for those who are "the least, the last, and the lost."

Without it, you cheapen the positions of those who are serving. Without this passion for rescue, board members will not be properly fit and equipped for their role. They will make decisions based solely on finances and fear, instead of faith and vision!

Oh, and although my husband is adamant I don't blog his emails, I can't resist a few quotes from him, either:

Hi. Hope your trip was good and that you are having fun, which, no doubt you are. I on the other hand never have fun, so everything is as it should be.

well,here goes nothing...

3. Pat Martin called in sick
4. Larry Martin called in sick
5. Murray left a message to cancel his shift on saturday due to going to Edmonton to pick up Melanie.
9. I feel like cr-p. But you knew that. [Ken has pnemonia.]

Okay, and letter number 2:

Hi. Well, yesterday was Ken and Len day, as we were minus michelle, vicki, Jon, Larry, Mel, Becca, Larry Martin, Pat, and anyone else. Fun times. At least Paula came for her evening shift.

Please pray for the Mission during this time of high excitement!! And low staff. Good bye from rainy Seattle!

Expansion Day!

Expansion Day means that Jon and I (and Vicki this afternoon - see yesterday's blog!) spend the day with other young missioners from across the continent. Okay, well, across the USA - we're the Canadian representation!

This year we are spending the day studying boards, which is a subject that interests me. (We have a GREAT board of directors!)

Something really weird is happening right now. There are two men beside me in the coffee shop who are speaking... FRENCH?!?! Suddenly, I feel right at home... Now he's speaking English ordering a "chocolate chip cookie" in a VERY thick French accent.

Well, enough wild ramblings for today.

I'll give YOU "highly recommended!"

Jon, Vicki and I worked hard to be able to get away for the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions Convention. However, only 2 out of 3 made it to Seattle, Washington today. Yes, travelling with others is always an adventure! (When I came to convention with Melanie she had to have her ID faxed to the airport!)

I'm going to blame it on the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, though. Here's a direct quote from their website: "a passport or birth certificate is highly recommended for travellers coming into the USA, and will be required in January of 2007."

And, in married couple fashion, Jon convinced Vicki not to bother looking for her travel documents, copy of this quote in hand. Fast forward to Jon and I playing Travel Scrabble & Chess on the airplane, and Vicki at home scrambling through boxes and whackloads of papers, finally finding BOTH of her necessary pieces of ID.

Vicki will be joining us today. And I would like to HIGHLY RECOMMEND to the Department of Homeland Security to spend a few of those military dollars on updating the website!

"Holy cyber-quizzes, Batman!"

So, the first time I ever looked into blogging, it was fairly an accident. I was surfing the net for "coffee" and was pleased to run into Rick's blog: Mmmm, That's Good Coffee...

I was a blogging virgin!! I was pretty excited about leaving a comment on his space! Imagine my delight when I found out he was a believer, and he encouraged me in my blogwalk. The other day he had a fun thing on his blog.

Those who know me well will know I love Superheros. All those superhero movies? I just eat them up! So I was pretty excited to find this on Rick's blog the other day. And even more pleased to see which superhero I was!

It's quick and it's just a little fun for your day off. Enjoy.

Your results:

You are Batman

You are dark, love gadgets
and have vowed to help the innocent
not suffer the pain you have endured.

Clothing Crisis

Societal waste. How many times have you bought something new in the last year? The last month? The last week? How about yesterday?

How much food is in the back of your pantry or the bottom of your freezer? And still, you take regular trips to the grocery store. How about leftovers? Do you ever throw them out?

Would you ever consider wearing used earrings? How about socks? Or underwear?

Would you like to decorate your house with a lot of dusty plastic flowers?

Do you like the idea of having to replace your appliances every few months because they are old and used and on their last legs? It's still a LOT cheaper than buying new, but it sure is time consuming! Those things are heavy!!

For the most part, the Regina RESCUE Mission lives as thriftfully and frugally as possible. Our clients eat "mystery" food from the recesses of people's freezers and pantries. One time Melanie made package after package of lemon merangue pie mix and not ONE of them set because they were too old! Someone donated Shake-n-Bake in packaging that I recognized from my childhood! I'm 37!!!!

We use some freezers that, if not defrosted weekly, have to be duct taped shut so they stay closed.

Our WARRM (Women's Auxillery Regina Rescue Mission) President and Vice President are concerned that we have an overflow of clothing that is going to be wasted if it isn't sorted through and redistributed in other ways.

It's a unique problem that has been caused by the fact that we are moving into a new building at the beginning of June. Even with turning away donations, we have more than we can use and get through in such a short time. And we cannot take any of the clothing or household goods with us when we move.

IF YOU CAN DONATE ANY TIME TO RESCUING THE DONATIONS FROM DEMOLITION, please contact Esther, our WARRM Vice President. You can email or call the Mission and I will pass it along to her. 543-0011 or rescue@reginarescuemission.org

Why I love my job

Rick Alvis is the current President of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions. In last month's Rescue Magazine, I really connected with his editorial.

These are exciting times to be involved in Rescue ministry work.

Serving as executive of a ministry requires wearing an assortment of hats and having varous degrees of responsibilities. There are times where you are meeting with government leaders, community leaders, or just plain meeting with clients.

God doesn't lead people into Rescue Mission work if they need real precise job descriptions and predictable schedules. I think the Lord directs flexible, pptimistic people into mission ministries who have absolute confidence that He pays special attention to the poor and outcast members of society. Sometimes God takes ordinary people into mission work and turns them into flexible, optimistic leaders with a vision for needy people. I think I'm probably one of those people.

Once upon a time, I expected to serve in a church somewhere, or go into foreign mission work. Later, I thought God would have me direct a camp and work with young people. Then He steered me into mission leadership, and I discovered this unusual life that has bits and pieces of everything in it.

Well, Rick's story mirrors my own and I am thrilled DAILY to be part of this great adventure!

Soul's Harbour - Help!

Vicki typed a letter for me and saved it on the computer as "Soul's Harbour - Help!" We sent it to some developers and now on to you. We ARE desperate!

To Whom It May Concern:

Regina Rescue Mission and Soul’s Harbour Mission House have announced a new Cooperative Partnership. The Regina Rescue Mission has three weeks to move out of their old shelter building, as the city is condemning it.

Soul’s Harbour has graciously offered to allow us the use of the second floor of their new building. However, it is a gutted workspace that needs professional tradesmen and skilled labourers, including:
- Plumbers
- Electricians
- Flooring
- Dropped Ceiling Tiles
- Drywall

We are looking for companies to send a team of workers (even one or two) to make this living space operational in less than three weeks!!

Our moving day is June 3rd. Everything must be completed by June 2nd. If you can help, call the President of Soul’s Harbour Mission House, Donovan Carroll, at 501-7270.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity to help the needy in Regina!!

Sincerely,

Michelle Porter

Question Period during the Legislative Assembly

Like I said, I can't keep up with God this week!! My third post today:

How exciting to receive news from Gareth Dillistone, one of our amazing board members, that MLA Don Toth mentioned the Rescue Mission Banquet during Question Period in the Legislature on Thursday:

The Deputy Speaker: — The member for Moosomin.

Regina Rescue Mission Fundraiser

Mr. Toth: — Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. Madam
Deputy Speaker, last night I had the privilege of joining my
colleague, the member from Cypress Hills, and also the member
from Regina Elphinstone-Centre, at the Regina Rescue
Mission’s 2006 annual Love Your Neighbour fundraising
banquet.

The master of the ceremonies for the evening was Reverend
Ken Porter, who was a founding executive director of the
mission. Madam Deputy Speaker, the purpose of the banquet
was to bring to everyone’s attention and awareness the reasons
for the Rescue Mission, and how by reaching out to those less
fortunate we can make a difference.

Madam Deputy Speaker, there were more than 600 people
gathered for last night’s banquet, and thanks to the generosity of
organizations and businesses in the city each one gathered were
treated to a scrumptious meal á la carte. We want to thank all
the sponsors for their donations and support.

The highlight I think, Madam Deputy Speaker, however was the
keynote address by Tara Robinson, CTV [Canadian Television
Network Ltd.] News and more specifically the testimony of
Melissa, who acknowledged the work of the Rescue Mission
and how her life was changed around from a life of prostitution
and addictions to drugs and alcohol.

Madam Deputy Speaker, I want to extend a hearty thank you to
the Rescue Mission for their work in this city and to the more
than 600 guests for the $67,000 they donated to help the Rescue
Mission. Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker.

Some Hon. Members: — Hear, hear!

If you missed tonight's newscast...

I've never blogged more than once in a day but I can't keep up with all this good news!! This from CTV today:

Regina Rescue Mission
Mon, May 15, 2006 06:39 PM CST

It's a mission of partnerships for one of Regina's Homeless Shelters. The son of Soul's Harbour's founder says things have changed since his mother passed away. Donavon Carroll says, "Before she passed away, she was going to do some different kind of outreach." The Regina Rescue Mission will be temporarily moved just above Souls Harbour. Both missions under one roof will allow those in need to get a good meal and a place to sleep.

The founder of RRM, Michelle Porter says, "We actually recently decided to partner up within the last couple of weeks. We were sitting commiserating. We had lost a key employee and of course Gerri Carroll passed away and we have been evicted all at the same time. And we thought what are we going to do and suddenly bingo, why don't we share?"

And sharing is just what they did. But the temporary facility will only be able to house 12 people. That's 8 fewer than the old Regina Rescue Mission. Michelle says, "The only people that don't have a place to live are those that need permanent housing."

Vern Hunter a new resident at the mission is one who can relate. Vern Hunter says "Not everybody is going to be able to go down there. And that's the sad part, it won't be able to house as many residents." The rescue mission will have a more permanent home which will accommodate more people in about a year. For now they are just happy Soul's Harbour took them in, like they do hundreds of those in need every year.

Former Addicts Graduate from Life Change Program

CTV News, from mysask.com:

Former Addicts Graduate from Life Change Program
Thu, May 11, 2006 11:44 AM CST

A colourful graduation ceremony last night for drug addicts who've turned their lives around. This year, eight grads have all gone through the one year life change program at the Regina Rescue Mission. The only program of its kind in the city. Rider Coach Danny Barrett and his wife Alison handed out the graduation awards. The five men and three women are all now either employed, or back in school. It has been a long journey...most had been living on the streets, addicted to drugs and alcohol. The grads had a chance to tell their own success stories to the crowd of six hundred.

Melissa Wright: "You know when you hit rock bottom, it's almost like there's nothing out there. No hope. There's no forgiveness, there's nothing. With the Regina Rescue Mission, it opened so many doors. And Jesus is there waiting for us. Our lives are transformed by the renewing of our minds. We're miracles today. To get off the drugs, to choose to get off the drugs is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. But it's the best decision I have ever made."

Last night's graduation banquet raised more than 67 thousand dollars for the work of the Regina Rescue Mission.

And a first for the Regina Rescue mission last night. A young woman gave birth to a bouncing baby boy at the Mission at 2am this morning. Paramedics arrived in time to assist in the delivery, but there was no time to move the mom to hospital. The mom and her 6 pound, 2 oz baby boy are doing fine. They are both now resting in hospital.

Love Your Neighbour!

Just a brief note as I leave the office tonight:

One more sleep until the Third Annual Love Your Neighbour Fund Raising Banquet!! We have 560 people coming!! All of us are geared up for the big graduation celebration, and we look forward to sharing this special night with our many friends of rescue. There are a lot of surprises in store, but here's a reminder of why it's the "Love Your Neighbour" Banquet:

"Friends, every human spirit longs to be loved and respected. Every human spirit cries out, "Does anybody love me? Am I significant to anyone?" This little boy experienced a crushed spirit. Then for a brief moment, he heard words that healed.
The Bible says, "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones" (Proverbs 16:24)."

I'll see 560 of you tomorrow night where there will be words of refreshment and joy!

Monday, May 08, 2006

When you hear bad news remember this:

Those who live in the shelter
of the MOST HIGH
will find rest in the shadow
of the ALMIGHTY.

This I declare of the LORD:
He alone is my refuge
my place of safety
He is My God
and I am trusting HIM.

Annual Love Your Neighbour Fund Raising Banquet

Well, folks, this is the last call for a seat at our Third Annual Love Your Neighbour Fund Raising Banquet. It's going to be a fantastic night!

We have 550 people coming so far, the dinner menu is set to delicious, and we have special guests from across the Prairies. We are looking forward to the music of the Regina String Quartet, all members of a certain symphony I am not allowed to blog about... I had the priveledge of hearing Tara Robinson MC the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards and she is truly a delight!

And of course, the real reason we all attend (besides to give money to our wonderful cause!) is the LifeChange Graduation. Please come and meet Myrna, Crystal, Melissa and her son, Ethan, Jay, Vince, Don, Charlie, & Ken. It is going to be an incredible ceremony with presentations made by our very own Roughrider Coach Couple, Danny & Alison Barrett.

The other day, Don and Ken came on the radio with me to promote our special event, and he said, "I've never graduated from anything before." This is quite common amongst our graduates. Please come to show them your support. What they have overcome in one year would take many of us an entire lifetime to achieve.

Call me by Monday at Noon to get in! There are very few seats left!! 543-0011. It starts at 6:30 and the doors open at 6:00. Hope to see you Wednesday May 10th!

I'm Not Famous?

"In the category of Community Leadership and Enhancement, the 2006 Women of Distinction Award goes to..." some other lady. Oh well! I didn't get voted in as a Woman of Distinction tonight but I had a wonderful time sitting with friends and enjoying the evening. I didn't know I had fans, but a group of ladies surprised me and purchased tickets ($85!) just to come out and support me!

At one point in the evening they said, "Did you have an acceptance speech ready?!" "Yes." "READ IT TO US!!" Well, that was a little embarrassing on the spot, so I promised I would blog it:

"How can I get to Heaven?"
The Bible says, "Sell everything
you have and give it to the poor."
6 years ago, my husband & I did just that.
We sold what we owned, moved to Regina,
cashed in our RSP's, and founded
Regina RESCUE Mission.

One of the first people we contacted while
conducting our needs assessment was the
founding director of Soul's Harbour, Geri
Carroll, who passed away this year.

I'd like to accept this award in her memory.
Thank you.

Are you Board?

Our annual fund raising banquet is coming up and we and the board have been working hard on the details! If you want to attend the banquet, it's filling up fast but check out our website http://www.reginarescuemission.org or give me a call at 543-0011. I have connections and I can get you in!

We held a board meeting a couple of weeks ago. We only meet four times per year and there is a lot of behind the scenes work involved before actual board meeting night. It went oh so well. We have such a great board. We were able to get them all business cards. But here's what the cards won't tell you:

Harold Lutzer, Chairman,
Executive Director of Canadian Revivial Fellowship (CRF) for 30 years, brother of the prolific author and speaker, Irwin Lutzer, of Moody Bible Church in Chicago. Harold is now semi-retired and serving as the Director of Development of CRF.

Pray for him as he is recovering from a heart attack and his wife, Charlene went into the hospital last week. Charlene serves as the Chaplain of WARRM, the Women's Auxillery of Regina RESCUE Mission.

Harold and I meet for breakfast several times a year. He is my mentor and confidante and I appreciate his real life, Biblically sound wisdom.

Alan Jacobson, Vice-Chairman,
Crown Counsel with the Saskatchewan government, daddy to six growing children, and husband of Sally, Communications Coordinator of WARRM. Alan served for a time under Len & Doris Klassen, Founding Directors of New Life Mission in Kamloops, BC. Ken also got his start working for Len & Doris in Kamloops one summer.

When Len found out Ken and I were moving to Regina to start a RESCUE Mission, he told us about Alan. He said to call him up and say, "Are you going to be a lawyer or a liar?" Well, that must have been some inside joke but we were grateful Alan said yes!

We have relied on his knowledge in all things legal including reading reams of technical contracts written in that foreign language called Legalese. Alan is also Vice Chairman, and Ken and I have enjoyed getting to know him on this level. Like when we got together with him for an early breakfast before our last meeting to plan the agenda. I must admit, I was a little nervous, but it subsided when he came into Humpty's looking like a drowned rat in a business suit, from riding his bike in the downpour of that day!

Dave Gorrie, Secretary,
Dave is a Child Psychologist with the Regina School Board. His wife teaches elementary school. What a fun combination! They just attended their daughters grad from a fine arts school in New Brunswick. I wonder what it would have been like growing up Gorrie?!

Lionel Popescu was a man who was instrumental in assisting us in the founding of Regina RESCUE Mission. Before he passed away, he found two board members to replace him. One was Dave. I knew that if he was recommended by Lionel, he would be quality.

Dave always asks how we are doing personally. He always has a word of encouragement or empathy for Ken and I. He has also been good in encouraging our staff in continuing our program and services, leading them with confidence in the ways we can help the children that stay with us. He takes an interest in risk management and his imput into the business of the board is valuable because of it. (Much of the board's role is to assess and avoid risk.)

Brian Hardy, Treasurer,Brian works hard for us. Hm... "Works hard Hardy." Well, he's probably heard that before. His latest feat is finding table sponsors for 8 tables at our Love Your Neighbour Fund Raising Banquet! (Click on "Are you Board" to find out more.) Brian & Roberta know how to get others to give generously, and also give generously themselves.

Brian's background is in banking, having retired as the Vice President of TD Canada Trust Southern Saskatchewan Banks. I think he retired in order to serve on our board, but I'm not sure. He looks after making sense of audit reports and anything financial. We finally broke down and granted him signing authority. =) We are so grateful to have him as our financial advisor and friend.

Dave Pahl,
Dave works on an important floor of TransGas. That's SaskEnergy. I called him with a concern about a power line the other day and that was very embarrassing. Anyway, Dave also works for us. He volunteers one evening per week as an Evening Supervisor. (Pretty much the staff on duty.) So, if you want to meet him, stop by on Tuesday night. You'll find him visiting the guys, making devilled eggs, or maybe fixing a toilet.

Dave also founded our Men's Informal Service Club: MiSC, as it is affectionaly known around here. It's still in it's infancy stages but we've had one VERY successful work bee and hope to have another one or two this summer! Dave's wife, Diane, volunteers as an Adopt-A-Mom with our ladies, and is a member of WARRM.

On the board, Dave is a go-getter. He likes to get down to business and isn't afraid to try new things. He also is responsible for having several tables sponsored for our upcoming banquet. One in particular has caused quite the fuss: In-Line Pigging Solutions! I definately want to sit at that table.

Doug Gold,
We have always had a Realtor on our board. It seems to be an important role for an ever expanding Mission who's director is a visionary! Doug understands that one of our core values is Expansion, and he works very closely with Ken in land and building acquisition. Between the two of them I'm sure every vacant building in downtown Regina has been explored! He has a good sense of administration and is the Board Representative on our Shelter Committee.

Doug's wife, Marg, is a member of WARRM and provider of the best Butterhorns you ever had to all important occasions! Doug is an asset to our staff as he has assisted them in home buying.

Gareth Dillistone,
Gareth was asked to serve on the board for his marketing imput. He is a Video Journalist on the A-Team (Mr. T look out!) with CTV and is very well connected around the city. (Imagine, a personal interview with the Prime Minister?!) You'd be amazed who's phone numbers he has on his cell phone!

After making sure the news gets filmed, he usually rushes into the board meeting at the last minute and fills up with goodies for his dinner. His latest board contribution has been working with me to find a speaker for our fund raising banquet (Yay, Tara Robinson!) I'm sure I'll be blogging more about this later!

Gareth has helped to raise our profile in the community and amongst politicians and others he happens to be hobnobbing with. He hobnobs at home with Patti and the kids, who are homeschooled by the amazing Patti.

Murray Hack,
Our newest and youngest member of the board. I had a brainstorm at the last convention I was at. I needed our board to represent all ages of the spectrum. A large portion of our staff are in their twenties, so I wanted a twenty-something person who was up-and-coming in the business community that would represent them at the board level.

Murray had already established a heart for the homeless as he was a regular weekly Evening Supervisor. Now, he actually works an entire eight hour shift every Saturday. When he found out we had no staff available for that shift, he graciously agreed to give up his Saturday to cover.

Murray is working towards completing his P Eng. (not sure what that is but he's an Engineer of some sort...) and is perhaps one of the youngest Managers in SaskTel. Murray understands that it takes money to raise money, and although he grew up driving tractors, (my apologies to the country people reading this--which is half my staff and my own husband) he has a keen business sense and has been "citified."

Murray is dating our LifeChange Program Director. I won't give away her name since she told me it was not "bloggable" material. So, anyone who's made it to the end of this is now privy to the excitement we've all been sharing around here!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's Banquet Blog!

Not your every day eviction notice...

April 28, 2006

Dear Tenant of 2076 Scarth St.

We have received official notice from the owner of this building that we must vacate the property by May 31st, 2006. We therefore have no choice but to notify you that you must also move out by that date.

I cannot say that we will have apartments for you to rent somewhere else; in fact it looks very unlikely at this point. If we do get a building suitable to rentals, we will notify you within the next month. You would do well to find a place before the end of the month of May because the power and water will be shut off, and the owner may take action to remove anyone left.

Please take only what belongs to you when you move, as the beds belong to the Mission and we may need them in the future. The equipment and furniture on the main level belongs to the Mission and we need it for the future. We are moving ahead with a construction project, which will have 30 brand new, self-contained suites. They will all be rented at affordable housing rates.

This project will open in about a year (or more) from now. If you want to rent one of these suites, contact the Mission at 543-0011 when you hear it is open. If you need something to set up in a new place, ask Len or George. We may be able to help you with some furniture, towels, bedding, toiletries, etc.

We must maintain the rules right up until May 31st, so don’t think partying or vandalism will be tolerated just because there’s only a month, week or day left. We appreciate all of you who have been good tenants in an old and very imperfect building. We hope we can serve you again in the future.

On behalf of the Regina RESCUE Mission,

Ken Porter
Executive Director

E-Day

Friday was E-Day.

Eviction Day at the Shelter.

Ken, Len and George gave the residents their thirty day notice.

Where are they going to move?

That's a good question. We have several options but are waiting upon zoning and building permissions from the City of Regina. We're not worried, but holding fast to the truth that God loves the people we serve more than we do, so He will provide a new Shelter and Drop-In.

To read the Media Release from October, please click on the "E-Day" Title Bar at the top.

PS. Happy Birthday, Carmelita!
